In summer, plant becomes semi-woody and petals become papery and light tan colored. Desert Zinnia prefers full sun and well-draining soil. It is drought tolerant once it's established but does better with some supplemental summer water. Foliage is gray-green and needle-like with sharp tips.

Replace turf with groundcovers, trees, and shrubs. If you have areas where no one uses the grass, patches that do not grow well, or a turf area too small to water without runoff, consider replacing the turf with water-efficient landscaping.
