Purple Showers Viola is an attractive perennial with blue-violet flowers under 2' in height and blooming in winter through spring in mild winter areas and blooming in spring through summer in colder areas. Usually treated as an annual.

This groundcover-small shrub will grow 1' tall, spreading 4' in a year. It has medium-size green leaves with lavender that have a dark purple center. The flower color changes to white the next day! The flowers bloom in fall and winter but in mild coastal areas, may bloom all year. It needs well draining soil. This plant looks great on a hillside or in a hanging basket.

Dianthus caryophyllus is a perennial. It produces double flowers in red, pink, white or yellow in the spring. Bluish green leaves and leafy stems often become woody at the base. It prefers afternoon shade in hot inland areas with alkaline soil. Encourage more blooms by deadheading. Carnations have a faint fragrance and make excellent cut flowers.
